Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Azure, a fess dancett parti per fess Or and Argent.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Gold scroll inscribed "NE PLUS ULTRA" in Black letters.

Symbolism
The shield is blue for Infantry and the notched fess gives the appearance of mountains - the motto of the State of Montana is "Oro y Plata" - gold and silver - the fess is accordingly made in gold and silver (white enamel); thus symbolizing the Regiment's original place of organization.  The motto translates to "Nothing Beyond or Better."

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 416th Infantry Regiment on 28 October 1925.  It was redesignated for the 416th Regiment on 22 August 1960.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Army Reserve:  On a wreath of the colors Or and Azure the Lexington Minute Man Proper.  The statue of the Minute Man, Captain John Parker (H.H. Kitson, sculptor), stands on the Common in Lexington, Massachusetts.

Motto

NE PLUS ULTRA (Nothing Beyond or Better).
